Opportunities to Volunteer
Remember... WATR provides opportunities to meet and work with new people -- like-minded folks like yourself.

Attend regularly, and then report back:
Jackson County Commissioners Meetings: First and Third Mondays of each month.
Swain County Commissioners Meetings: First and Third Tuesdays of each month. Plus Swain County Advisory Planning Board, currently second and fourth Thursdays of each month.
MEMBERS’ OPPORTUNITIES
Unsure about where to fit in? Call the office. Let’s talk….maybe let’s do lunch.
Conservation --
• Organize “Forums” on relevant water issues.
• Keep track of county, state, legislature issues
• Particularly, attend Jackson or Swain County Commission meeting (s) and keep membership aware of environmental issues
• Likewise, Understand and communicate current and anticipated ordinances
• Organize letter writing campaign (Letters to the Editor, public officials,etc.)
• Prepare articles for website and WATRline (appropriate for all focus areas)
Events & Membership --
• Plan and/or organize a picnic or event
• Lead a hike
• Organize a rafting trip
• Organize or participate in River Clean-ups
• Organize a Variety Show or River Festival
• Using our database, report on membership levels and dues payment
• Suggest new ways to reach and retain members.
Public Education--
• Assist in formal education programs (WATR workshops) for teachers, contractors, etc. (WATR usually will have grants and grant obligations for these activities)
• Develop printed materials for public use on water issues
• Lead “kids in the creek” programs
• Staff the WATR booth (with others) at festivals – we can use any and all members for this activity
• Wear the Tuck Costume at festivals when WATR has a booth
• Help plan WATR festivals
Technical--
• Assist with monthly water monitoring
• Develop, lead, or participate in a Sediment Watch program – aimed at spotting, tracing, and sampling sediment plumes during and following storm events.
• Assist with water monitoring, data collection, photographing sites in emergency situations (dam breaks, hurricane, etc)
• Participate in our contract jobs – review our sampling and analysis plans and identify places where membership assistance would help.
Administrative --
• Help in the office one-half day a month or more….
• Enter recent dues and donation payments and generate thank-you letters. Help us organize our “Meeting box”.
• Assist with mailings (WATRline, Fundraising Drive letters, etc.)
• Provide input of ideas, stories to the WATRline and the website
• Even become Editor of WATRline
• Publicity for upcoming events – press releases, radio, mailings
Odd or off-beat jobs –
• We will have funds to buy a waterproof video camera. Can shop on line and help identify a model that is best for us?
• We need to float the creeks and video the banks that are built on old car carcasses and banks that are caving in. Can you raft and take pictures?
